The American Wild Horse is a symbol of the freedom and power and has woven himself into the very fabric of what is America. However, as a nation, we have done little to extend either stewardship or respect for these noble animals. Instead, we have herded them, broken them, abused them, and slaughtered them. And now, without swift action, we are at risk of loosing them forever.
Although the 1971 Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act was intended to protect our Wild Horses, it has been weakened throughout the years by policy and regulation changes, leaving our wild horses unprotected. A continued and aggressive wild horse removal policy has resulted in more wild horses now living in captivity than that which remain in the wild. This capture & removal policy costs tax payers millions of dollars annually, ignores federal mandates and laws that guaranteed wild horses a home on our public lands, and threatens the genetic viability and long-term survival of the species.
The only hope for America’s wild horses is the American people. Free and untamed wild horses don’t make anyone a profit out there on some of the most remote areas of our Public and Park lands. Therefore, we must claim their value — their value to the spirit of the American people — our living history.
In an effort to protect and preserve our remaining wild horses, Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary spearheaded The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, a coalition of organizations working together to implement responsible and ethical wild horse management policies. This diverse coalition includes some 25 organizations, representing over 11 million people. To learn more about the latest policy initiatives and political issues, visit The AWHPC.
