June 19, 2007: Urge your Representative to oppose Section 123 of the 2007 Farm Bill
Dear Friends,
Americans have spoken out in massive numbers to end the slaughter of our nation’s wild and domestic horses. As we wait for the Congress to pass long overdue Federal legislation, horse slaughter has been banned in the States of Texas and Illinois – the only states where horse slaughter plants currently exist in the United States.
However, legislation now making its way through Congress could undue the State bans on horse slaughter. Section 123 of the 2007 Farm Bill denies states the right to pass laws concerning the processing of animals for food. If passed, both the Texas and Illinois laws banning horse slaughter would be null and void. (This law would also nullify state laws concerning other animal welfare issues such as foie gras, the use of gestation crates, and more).
Please contact your Representatives in the House today and urge them to oppose Section 123 of the 2007 Farm Bill. You can find your U.S. Representative at www.house.gov or you can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be transferred to your Rep’s office.
