Mara roamed free with her herd in the Twin Peaks Herd Management area in northern California until the day that a round up would leave her world shattered and her herd destroyed. After spending many months being sorted, hauled, and shifted around the country, Mara found herself in a long-term holding facility where she was available for sale to the highest bidder.
She was sold to the same underground auction as Epic and sold to someone who could not handle her. The next chapter of her story is unknown but when Mara was found next she had a fractured skull and a sheriff had a gun to her head ready to put her out of her misery. Thankfully Wild Horse Rescue Center stepped in and took Mara back to their facility to rehabilitate her. In addition to saving her life, WHRC reunited Mara with her old friend Epic. For these two mares, their horrific journey had finally ended. They were together, safe and would soon be on their way to life much like they once knew it.
On Wednesday, November 14, Mara arrived at the Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary with Epic and her young colt Kudo by her side. The three will spend the rest of their days here living in peace, comfort and love.
