July 2, 2009: Update on Abused and Abandoned Mare
Last
Friday I emailed you about a pretty grey mare that was brutally abused
and then dumped in the Nevada desert. I am happy to tell you that she
is safe, is being seen by a vet to care for her wound, and is getting
prepared for transport to her new home at a sanctuary outside of San
Diego called Horses
of Tir Na Nog. Return to Freedom is grateful for
their generous offer to welcome this mare to their sanctuary.
This sweet girl, who is still a baby (the vet has estimated that she is likely only 2 years old) is going to have a happy ending thanks to the endless generosity and compassion of this community. Thank you.
Silver Lining
We are thrilled that this filly is safe and will never again endure such cruelty. Now we are hoping to create a silver lining to her sad story. First, we raised enough money to rescue her, pay her feed bills to the livestock yard and transport her to San Diego. We are hoping to raise a little more so that we can partner with the Nevada Department of Agriculture in issuing a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who did this to her. People who brand their horses often have more than one. How long will it be before this person brutalizes another horse?
Please consider helping
us do this by making
a donation. Any funds that come in for her at this
point will! be used to offer a reward. If the reward never gets to be
used, Horses of Tir Na Nog will get the donation to use towards her
ongoing care and maybe a few apples. We are also excited to report that
Humane Society of the United States has stepped up to offer $2500 towards
the reward fund!
Secondly, several homes were offered for the grey mare. While she only needs one home, there are several horses that we know of that still don't have anyone stepping forward to offer them a home. They don't all have sad stories. Some are simply the unfortunate victims of a bad ecomony. But they all need love and a lifelong home nonetheless. We are asking those of you who offered a home to the grey mare to consider leaving your welcome door open to another horse in need. What an amazing silver lining it will be if this young horse's suffering means that many more horses will be saved. I will contact those who offered a home seperately. You can also visit our orphaned animals blog to learn more about those still waiting for someone to offer them a home.
